Your experiences and identity are important,
and your unique perspective is an asset
during the job search.
However, for students from historically marginalized groups
and other backgrounds, navigating the job search can be
complex. These groups include, but are not limited to:
■
Students of color
■
LGBTQ+ students
■
Students with disabilities
■
International students
■
Student veterans
■
Religious students
Tips for Navigating Identity During
the Job Search
■
Don’t apologize for what makes you different. Those
differences are your strengths, and they allow you to
contribute something unique to the workplace.
■
Advocate for yourself and know your legal protections.
■
Choose what to share and when to share it. Your employer
does not have a right to know about your religious beliefs,
gender identity, sexuality, disabilities, etc. However,
disclosing certain information can ensure you receive
reasonable accommodations within the workplace.
■
Be mindful of your online presence. Employers often look
up potential employees on search engines and social media.
Make sure your name and pronouns are consistent on
public platforms, and if you are not planning on disclosing
something to an employer, update your privacy settings.
■
Reach out to your mentors, colleagues, and alumni network
for support.
How to Evaluate an Employer
for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
When considering a position with a certain company, look for:
■
Company mission, values, and culture
■
DEI statements
■
Non-discrimination policies
■
Employee demographic statistics
■
DEI training
■
Employee affinity/resource groups
■
Disability resources like reserved parking, hybrid work
options, flexible scheduling, and accessible technology
■
Inclusive benefits, such as parental leave, domestic partner
coverage, mental health resources, and hormone therapy
You may also want to check resources like LinkedIn, Glassdoor,
or the Raider Network for more candid information from
current or former employees.
