Job Search: Overview & Resources
Stay Safe
Job Search Resources
Unfortunately, recruitment scams are common. Keep an eye
open for phishing emails and other high-pressure tactics
designed to rob you of personal data or even your money.

■
■
Legitimate recruitment emails will typically lead to a
recognized recruitment platform like Career Launch
(12twenty). A company is highly unlikely to contact you
through text or direct messages.
Check to make sure an email comes from an official company
account (contactname@companyname.com).
■
If the email contains multiple grammar and spelling
mistakes, it may be a scam.
■
Be wary of links, attachments, and QR codes. Phishers often
use them to steal data.
■
Career Connections will never release your contact
information to an employer without receiving your approval
first. If an “employer” claims we sent them your way but you
have not heard from us, it is likely a scam.

Industry-Specific Job Boards
You can peruse a list of industry-specific
job boards here. If you are not sure
what job boards are most used in your
field, ask those in your network who
may know, or use online resources like
What Can I Do With This Major?
■
Scammers will create a sense of urgency to discourage you
from thinking things over. If you are being asked to make a
decision within a very short time frame, the offer may not be
genuine.
■
Legitimate job offers are not extended without an interview
beforehand.
■
You will never be required to pay to accept a job offer.
■
Never agree to transfer money from your personal bank
accounts to an employer.
■
Remote employers will use services like secure drop boxes;
do not share your social security card over email.
■
If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
If you suspect that you have been contacted by a fraudulent
employer, email Career Connections immediately.
